Fashion & Furniture: Art Resources

Palida Boonyarungsrit on bridging craft and contemporary design

Palida “Pug” Boonyarungsrit stands at the helm of a two-generation creative lineage. As Design Director of Art Resources, a Bangkok-based family-owned furniture label founded in 1989, she carries forward its Art Deco roots while shaping a new chapter that bridges tradition with contemporary design. The studio’s creations span bespoke furniture and sculptural objects, all rooted in local craftsmanship.

Pug began her creative path in art and fashion photography, developing her own practice in London, where she refined an instinct for composition, colour, and storytelling. Since returning to Thailand in 2019, she has woven these sensibilities into Art Resources, reshaping its approach to furniture-making. In this interview, she reflects on her creative journey, including the intersections between fashion and furniture, and how Art Resources continues to evolve in the present.

Hello, Pug! Could you please introduce yourself? And how would you describe your role as Design Director at Art Resources?

Hi, my name is Pug! Art Resources has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I knew I would eventually return to continue the business my father founded. After finishing my studies in London, I remained there working in photography before moving back in 2019 to step into the role, just before the pandemic. At first, I started making furniture and objects I wished I had in my own home. When the world slowed down, I was lucky to have the time and space to play with materials, test ideas, and follow my curiosity. Today, Art Resources is about creating pieces that feel truly personal, furniture and objects that are not just functional, but speak to the individual stories and lifestyles of the people who live with them.

You began your creative career in art and fashion photography, working with names such as David Montgomery, Net-A-Porter, NOWNESS, and Dazed. How has that early immersion in fashion imagery shaped your aesthetic sensibility at Art Resources?

The eye for detail, the way colours interact, and the sense of composition I developed in photography now guide what I create, from furniture to objects. It is about bringing the same mood, narrative, and emotion I loved in images into the spaces and objects.

Art Resources draws from a wide range of influences, including photography, painting, film, and everyday objects. How do you translate these inspirations into a finished piece or collection? What does your creative process usually look like?

For me, inspiration comes from everywhere, even when I am walking down the street. From noticing colours, compositions, shapes, or small details that catch my eye, I usually make quick sketches. Depending on how I feel, sometimes I work with clay. If I like the design, I then bring it to life.

You recently collaborated with fashion designer Shone Puipia on ‘ร่วมโต๊ะ / RUAM-TOH. How did that collaboration come about?

I have admired Shone Puipia’s approach to colour, his fabric choices, and his brand aesthetic for a while. When we met, the conversation flowed so smoothly that we quickly decided to collaborate. Everything felt effortless and organic, allowing us to infuse our ideas seamlessly into the work.

The collection combines the symbolic meaning of the table as a place for gathering with both your and Shone’s shared affinity for colour, graphic elements, and craftsmanship. Could you walk us through how you translated Shone’s textile and construction techniques into parchment and table surfaces, and how the two studios worked together to merge these design languages?

The collection comprises eight limited-edition dining, console, and side tables. The minimal yet bold forms of Art Resources serve as the canvas for Shone Puipia to paint his world. Working primarily with parchment, a material made from goatskin, the tabletops reflect various elements present in Shone’s work: the colour combinations, playful ribbons, and abstraction of breasts. The inlay of parchment pieces recalls the pattern-cutting technique in the garments.

Two tables in the collection present a graphic collage of fabrics selected from Shone’s archive, which are later coated and polished. The deliberate raw edges and delicate strands of silk yarn are left visible. This project brings together the skilful hands of the two studios, challenging one another to create truly beautiful and unique pieces.

From this collaboration, how do you see the blending of fashion and furniture design evolving within the creative industries? How might it influence future cross-disciplinary projects at Art Resources?

Working on this project showed how flexible the line between fashion and furniture can be. Blending materials and techniques allowed us to create pieces that are both practical and artistic. It also opens up exciting possibilities for future projects, enabling us to experiment with new materials, techniques, and collaborations across different creative fields.

What trends do you see in the furniture and fashion industries across Southeast Asia? What opportunities or challenges in this interdisciplinary space excite you the most?

Across Southeast Asia, there is a growing appreciation for design and craftsmanship that stays true to heritage while embracing a modern edge. In both furniture and fashion, I see a strong movement toward storytelling through craft, from working with local materials to reimagining traditional techniques and forming new collaborations with artisans. It is an exciting moment to be part of.
