Farid Renais Ghimas

What is your full name?

Farid Renais Ghimas.

What is your first name?

Farid.

Where were you born?

Bengkulu, Indonesia.

Where do you currently reside and work?

Jakarta, Indonesia.

What is your educational background?

I obtained a BA in Fashion Photography from the Leeds Arts University in England, and thereafter an MA in Fashion Image from Central Saint Martins.

What are other details of experiences, work or otherwise, that have led you to your current work?

My personal projects are usually rooted in everyday life, portrayal of a place, and relationships between humans, developed through a period of time while working closely with the people and the environments, like the projects Angan-Angan Harsa and  Dayak Meratus of Loksado.

These projects established my visual language and my approach to making imagery, which led to editorial assignments and commissioned work seeking the same sensitivity and narrative depth.

How would you describe your practice/business?

My work captures the energy and spontaneity of real moments.

My images reflect a sense of warmth and familiarity, embracing everyday life with a focus on joy, connection, and subtle narratives. I spent some time with film photography, so I try to carry the same organic tonality into my digital work. I preserve a richness in colour and texture that feels instinctive and lived-in. My approach balances composition with spontaneity, allowing people to exist naturally within their environment rather than being overly directed or staged.

What are the highlight projects in your career so far?

It has been a sequence of events, and each project has made me feel like I have transformed into a more mature artist. he biggest highlight so far is my project Angan-Angan Harsa, which I created during my MA at Central Saint Martins in 202published as a book by Jordan, jordan Édition, a self-funded independent publisher focusing on Indonesian artists.

In November, I  went to Paris Photo for the first time because the book was shortlisted for the Aperture First Photobook Award. The project will be displayed at the PhotoVogue Festival in 2026 as part of the East and South East Asian Panorama category.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on wrapping up Angan-Angan Harsa with its final round of presentations, exhibitions, and book-related commitments. Once that is complete, I am ready to move on to the next projects, even though I am still figuring out what shape they will take.
