What is your educational background?
I obtained a diploma in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Singapore. Then I pursued a degree at LASALLE College of the Arts in the BA (Hons) Fashion Media and Industries programme.
What are other details of experiences, work or otherwise, that have led you to your current work?
I started out in the fashion industry as a freelance styling assistant after completing my diploma. Then during my degree, I interned at Men's Folio Singapore as an editorial assistant, which was how I got my start in fashion writing. Since then, I have expanded into the business side of the industry, working across marketing and PR.
How would you describe your practice/business?
My practice lives at the intersection of fashion, religion, and culture, specifically through a Malay Muslim lens. My work is an ongoing attempt to explore the tension between them.
What are the highlight projects in your career so far?
A highlight would be my graduation project, “Sanctity of Self.” It is a fashion publication that gave me the opportunity to collaborate with friends and people I admired to explore Islam from a fashion perspective. I grew up studying in a Madrasah, and it was the first time I was able to merge my love for fashion with my religious background. The collaborations made the work feel bigger than just my own voice.
What are you currently working on?
Admittedly, most of my fashion influences come from the major capitals, but lately, I have found myself looking closer to home. I am interested in writing works that explore the evolution of cultural dress and how it fits into our lives today, examining fashion on a more intimate level to see how clothes help us navigate the world.
Beyond this, I am also looking to create a platform to share my thoughts on the current state of the industry alongside the next issue of Sanctity of Self.
