What is your full name?
Irma Wandari Yasandikusuma.
What is your first name?
Irma.
Where were you born?
Geneva, Switzerland.
Where do you currently reside and work?
Bali, Indonesia.
What is your educational background?
I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design from Studio Berçot in Paris.
What are other details of experiences, work or otherwise, that have led you to your current work?
Although I began my career in fashion in Paris, I feel strong pull to explore and express my Indonesian heritage. It was only after coming to Bali for a creative retreat, and eventually making it my home, that I felt ready to shift my creative perspective, bringing together the life experiences and cultural insights I gained in Indonesia with the skills and knowledge I developed during my years in both Europe and Indonesia.
How would you describe your practice/business?
IRMAWY STUDIO proposes a thoughtful and refined wardrobe where multicultural identity becomes wearable expression. Moving between Indonesian sartorial heritage, nature and music, I compose pieces where materials, gestures and memory meet, translating cultural knowledge into distinctive forms. Garments are crafted from hand-woven, natural and upcycled textiles. Jewellery is sculpted from distinctive Indonesian stones, reclaimed metals and transformed materials. Each design emerges from a constellation of dedicated artisans, crafted for those who value creative authenticity, refined craftsmanship and a versatile sense of style.
What are the highlight projects in your career so far?
In 2015, I organised a poetic show with my community in Geneva at Bains des Pâquis, an iconic place by Lake Geneva that I grew up around. It was a DIY production, and no longer fully reflects my current aesthetic in fashion and styling, but it remains one of my most cherished creative memories.
In 2019, my first solo jewellery exhibition, at Bisma Eight Hotel in Ubud, marked an important milestone in my creative journey. It was my first project in Indonesia and a meaningful success, which gave me the confidence to continue developing my practice here.
In 2026, I presented ANEW, a continuous collection that brings together three of my favourite designs: the Shell Subeng ear studs, the Campur necklace and the Tari skirt. Each piece reflects a different facet of my creative practice, connecting artisanal heritage, personal and cultural memories, and contemporary expression.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently developing an ongoing collection of Campur necklaces, bringing elements of my earlier artisanal neckpiece practice into my new creative direction. These original pieces continue to resonate with past clients, some of whom still reach out after more than a decade to ask whether I continue to make them.
Alongside this, I am preparing the looks for the Wayang Women collective for their performance in Paris at the Asia NOW art fair on 19 October 2026.
