What is your full name?
Thanit Jaroenpotsathapon.
What is your first name?
Pon.
Where were you born?
Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Where do you currently reside and work?
San Pa Tong District, Chiang Mai, Thailand.
What is your educational background?
I obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Multi-Disciplinary Arts.
What are other details of experiences, work or otherwise, that have led you to your current work?
It is less about my own work experience and more about growing up in a family that has worked with textiles and batik since I was born. Being surrounded by this environment from a young age naturally influenced me and helped me develop a love for the arts.
How would you describe your practice/business?
Tha Homemade is a contemporary fashion brand based in Chiang Mai, combining traditional textile techniques with modern design. We mainly work with handmade batik, dyeing and other textile techniques to create clothing that is playful and easy to wear in everyday life. Each piece goes through a handmade process, making every item slightly different and one of a kind. We also work closely with local artisans, exploring new ways to bring traditional craftsmanship into contemporary fashion.
What are the highlight projects in your career so far?
To be honest, I love every collection and project I have worked on, so I do not have a favourite, but there are two I would like to share. The first is the “Untitled (air)” collection, which I created for the DIPROM competition. It addresses air pollution and haze in Northern Thailand, and it is one of the projects in which I feel I could express myself most honestly and naturally.
The second is my recent collaboration with Pasta Tomatoo, a small pasta business run by my friend. It was fun to see my textile patterns turned into something completely different, like edible pasta! The result was cute, unique and looked delicious. It made me realise that creativity does not have to be limited to fashion or clothing. There are so many possibilities to explore, as long as we stay curious and enjoy trying new ideas.
What are you currently working on?
We are currently working on three exciting projects. The first is a new challenge for us. It focuses on environmental issues, something we care about as a brand, and we are taking a small part in a creative project that explores these issues through a different medium. We cannot share much yet, so stay tuned!
The second is a new drop coming soon. Every year, we try to find creative ways to reuse leftover fabric from our production and turn it into something new, and this year is no different.
Lastly, we are exploring something beyond clothing: possibly a home décor line. We are still experimenting and having fun with it, so it might take some time, but towards the end of this year, you might spot some of our textile patterns in the home décor section of a shopping mall.
