Danya Adhalia
What is your full name?
Danya Adhalia.
What is your first name?
Danya.
Where were you born?
Jakarta, Indonesia.
Where do you currently reside and work?
Jakarta, Indonesia.
What is your educational background?
Fashion Design BA (Hons) at University for the Creative Arts Epsom.
What are other details of experiences, work or otherwise, that have led you to your current work?
I had worked as a fashion designer for years before switching lanes to working at an organisation focusing on public policy advocacy for arts and culture in Indonesia. I then returned to pursuing design independently. Combining the knowledge and perspectives I have gathered from these experiences has led me to create Cipta Garis Temurun and Sedjarah Pakaian today.
How would you describe your practice/business?
Through Cipta Garis Temurun (CGT), we focus on creating a better fashion, dress and textile ecosystem in Indonesia, which includes the relationship among contemporary designs, traditional crafts, and living heritage. We organise public events such as classes, workshops and seminars surrounding the topic. We also provide product development services for organisations that are working with traditional artisans, aiming to foster equitable collaborations and co-creation frameworks. Under CGT, we also create educational content on social media, sharing in-depth socio-cultural and historical research on Indonesian fashion, dress and textile.
What are the highlight projects in your career so far?
Developing @sedjarah.pakaian on Instagram as an homage to my grandmother's manuscript on Indonesian traditional clothing from 1956 convinced me that the research is crucial for building a collective cultural narrative regarding our history. In the process, I had the privilege to meet and work with numerous practitioners and researchers. They have such diverse areas of interest, yet each one is connected to the other.
What are you currently working on?
Cipta Garis Temurun is preparing a series of classes and workshops for fashion studies based on Indonesian heritage. We are also conducting our own research focusing on topics such as regeneration within traditional crafts, decolonisation of fashion knowledge and systems, and approaches to innovation.
